Used Vehicles Titled Outside of Texas
If you are a new resident in Texas you may qualify for the New Resident tax on your vehicle(s). Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on 80% of the Standard Presumptive Value on used vehicles (non dealer sales) titled and registered in Texas. If your vehicle was registered in another state in your name before you came to Texas, your New Resident tax is a flat $90.00 on these vehicles in addition to the registration and title fees.

Vehicles Purchased Out of State
There is a 6.25% use tax on the selling price (less trade-in allowance) of a motor vehicle purchased outside of the state and later brought into the state for use on Texas highways by a Texas resident. The tax also applies to vehicles leased in another state and registered in Texas by a Texas resident. With proof of payment, similar tax paid on the vehicle to another state can be credited against the tax due.

The latter applies to us, but we haven't done anything yet. We still have Maryland temporary tags on the Venza.
