Back to High School
I never thought I'd say it at the age of 29, but I
miss high school. There I said it.
Yesterday I jumped in my souped up Delorean and traveled back to
the year 1998. Okay, really I just visited my high school campus,
but it was a really nostalgic time for me even though I was only
there for less than two hours. I had recieved an email last week
that one of my favorite high school teachers Dr. Jones was retiring
after 22 years of teaching Physics. If I had to name someone, this
is probably the guy that got me excited about science. I mean, that
is what I do today.
Anyways, in preparation for going to campus I emailed my high
school advisor, who was also my Latin teacher in 8th grade, and
asked if I could drop by his office to chat and catch up for a
little while. We ended up talking for about an hour about the last
11 years. It was as if I had never graduated high school. In some
ways I felt right at home as my old teacher told me about the
school, the students, and the teachers at St. Stephens. It really
made me reminisce on how great it was here. For one reason or
another, many teachers who work here end up staying for many many
years. In fact many of the teachers on campus have been there for
much longer than Dr. Jones. The other faculty member who was
retiring, Coach Paschall, had actually been there for 36 years
coaching sports.
After my chat with my advisor, I went to chapel service honoring
the two retiring teachers. It really was a Marty McFly experience
for me seeing some old teachers and sitting amongst students. I
like to believe that people thought I also looked like a high
schooler. I came home that night and ever since then I have been
non-stop telling Carolyn all these stories about high school. I am
surprised that she isn't tired of hearing them. Every few minutes
I'll say something like, "Oh... one more thing about high
school...."
I'll just say one more thing about it. It's really made me think
about growing up at that school and all the people who invested in
me there. I would not be where I am today if not for them.
