Running Again
There's nothing more motivating than the realization that you are
a weakling.
Last week I started going with Carolyn to the gym at 5-FREAKING-30
am. Yes, we would wake up at 5am, get ready and head to the gym.
Now, I haven't run in about 2 years, but I've been wanting to get
back into it for a while. So when I jumped on the treadmill for the
first time last week, I almost wanted to cover up the speedometer
and distance numbers because I felt like I was running so poorly
compared to people next to me.
I have yet to actually buy a gym membership, as I've pretty much
been sneaking in with Carolyn. Okay, not sneaking in. The front
desk person tells me that I have to go during regular sales hours
so that I can hear a salespitch, but we've been going so early
that we're gone well before the first salesperson arrives to the
gym.
The other day I go and I'm able to run 5k in about 30 minutes. So
I'm feeling pretty good about myself. Anyways, here's the thing.
I recently found out that Carolyn works with one of my old high
school friends at St. David's. This girl was a crazy avid runner
in high school and came in first in all these major competitions,
went to college did the same. So I ask her "how fast do you run?"
She tells me, "oh if I push myself I can do a 6min/mile, but
usually I average around a 7:30min/mile."
And then the kicker: "But I'm nowhere as fast as I used to be in
highschool."
me: *jaw drop*
I didn't want to say anything when she then asked, "how fast do
YOU run?"
So my new goal. Run fast(er).
