Computer-Building Illiteracy

I had to break down and finally replace my
extremely old computer.
I've had this computer for 3 years now and but when I built it, it
was based off of parts that were about 2 years old. So my knowledge
of computers is at least 5 years old. In the last couple of years,
I continued to upgrade the computer, but only based on these aging
technologies.
Two weeks ago, my computer finally died. The computer had been
unable to keep up with some of my programs, so when the network
port on the motherboard shorted-out, I decided that it was time to
get a computer. So Carolyn and I came up with a budget and it was
time to go shopping. That's when I realized I knew nothing about
today's computer technologies. Looking at Intel's computer chips,
I didn't know the difference between Core 2 Duos, dual cores, quad
cores, quad core extremes, let alone the other components needed
for computers. I miss the days when you just knew that a Pentium
III was faster than a Pentium II; and a 1.2 Ghz processor was
faster than 1.0 Ghz.
I even needed to upgrade the power supply in my case! Who knew?
Anyways, I think it was worth it though. In the end, a similarly
configured computer on Dell would have cost a third more than what
I paid, but still not be as fast. Hurray for properly working
computers!
