On the Bus
As I was riding the bus this morning, a
young girl got on the bus along with an old homeless lady whom I
see regularly. According to their conversation, the young girl was
riding the bus didn't know how to pay her bus fare and on top of
that the machine was rejecting her raggedy dollar bill. The
homeless lady offered her advice on how to get the machine to
cooperate. As the bus doors closed and began driving, the girl sat
down first to put her bags down and check an incoming text message
on her phone with the intention of getting up to pay the fare at
the next stop. Without fanfare, the homeless lady paid the fare for
both of them and gave the bus pass to the girl before sitting down
herself.
The girl, surprised at what had just happened, said, "no no, i
can't do that, please take my dollar then."
The old lady said, "Don't worry about it, it's on me. If it only
costs a dollar to make someone's day, then I'll gladly pay it."
When the lady got to her stop, the girl said to her, "Have a nice
day." To which the lady responded, "Thank you, I'm blessed each
day for all that I have."
It reminded me of the widow's offering in Mark 12: "Calling his
disciples to him, Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth, this poor
widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all
gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in
everythingall she had to live on.' "
