Greatest Chair and a Half
When we were at Crate and Barrel, the
saleslady said to us, "feel free to register for furniture, you
never know if a rich uncle will buy you a couch or something".
While we thought that that seemed a little outrageous, we figured
we'd just scan those things anyways. However, the most unlikely
item to get purchased on our registry, was the item that we wanted
the most.
It was a giant chair called a "Chair and a half". Think of it
either as a giant chair, or a small loveseat. It was big enough for
two people to sit in it, but small enough for one person to sit
comfortably with arms on both armrests. We fell in love with it
immediately. Then we saw the price tag.
"$1599.99"
FOR A CHAIR?!?!?!
We scanned it, but we both knew that it wasn't going to happen. No
one was going to buy that for us, and we weren't going to pay
$1600 ourselves either.
Then a few weeks ago we had a glimmer of hope. Alex and Teresa told
us that they bought a Crate and Barrel couch on Craigslist for
$300. The couch was around $1000, and they had found it used. While
we found that encouraging, no one was selling this "chair and a
half" on Craigslist. Then a few days later Teresa sent us email:
Someone was selling the exact chair we wanted for only $500! It had
only been used a year, and the couple was looking to get rid of it
ASAP before they moved next month. Sweet, we emailed them
immediately and went over to visit them. The chair was in good
condition, but it had cat scratches over one armrest! Apparently,
this couple had moved in together recently and within a month the
cat had made a scratching post out of their $1600 couch. This
disappointed us because we felt that it wasn't worth $500 anymore.
We left, but then a day later, the guy emailed us back and said
that they'd sell it to us for $400. We responded that we had
called leather repair places and found that it would cost about
$200 to repair and asked if we could buy for $300. The guy said
sure, so we quickly went and picked it up that very day!
Thanks to Teresa for having a Craigslist eagle eye, for Matt and
Shannon who graciously loaned us their truck to pick up the stuff,
and my dad who came along with us to help me carry the chair
out.
