Well, it happened again.

Less than two months after I had my first ever hard drive crash, I have another dead hard drive. I lost another 500GB hard drive the same way the first one died: a slow painful death, with odd sounds coming from the hard drive, leading to the eventual unusability of the drive.

Fortunately the drive was still under warranty, so I sent it in and got a replacement drive very quickly. I think the problem is insufficient cooling in the computer case. I'm a big proponent of quiet computers and so I've done a few things to keep the fan noise and hard drive noise to a bare minimum. In college, my computer was so loud that it always sounded like it was going to take off into space. These days, I sleep with the computer right next to the bed and barely hear but a slight hum when it is on overnight.

I ordered an extra fan for the computer and hopefully the problem is solved.
