Sunday's A-comin
"It's Saturday. But Sunday's A-comin'."
I hope everyone had a blessed Good Friday. Our small group has been
studied Nahum this past Thursday. If you have ever studied Nahum
before, you'll know that it's not the most uplifting book of the
Bible. Most of the minor prophets talk about the wrath of God, but
they also talk about God restoring and redeeming a people from
punishment. Nahum doesn't mention that. Instead, it talks about
the complete utter destruction of the city of Nineveh. Not only
does it talk about the physical destruction, but the book ends with
everyone applauding its destruction. And just as it was prophesied,
the city of Nineveh was utterly destroyed less than 50 years after
Nahum was written.
One of the things we talked about in small group was why Nahum goes
into so much detail. To be honest, it seems like the book could
have been wrapped up in the first 8 verses. But the guys in the
group brought up the totality of destruction to signify God's
hatred of sin. This is not a God who deals with sin lightly, nor
does He ignore it. He is serious about it. God is so serious
regarding sin that He gave His Son to be punished for it in our
place.
Though the wrath of God poured out for the sins of the city of
Nineveh was great, consider how much greater the wrath for the sins
of the whole world was. And consider that wrath concentrated into
one Person. It's hard to imagine. And yet, studying Nahum right
before Good Friday was helpful to better understand the God's
seriousness of sin, and then consequently, to better understand the
depth of Grace that is afforded to me.
Though my sins be as scarlet, He washed them white as snow.
