3D: It's like you're there
Last Friday, Carolyn and I caught an
opening day show of U2-3D in the IMAX theater. Since U2 is one of
my favorite bands, I of course had no choice but to go watch it.
And since Carolyn is my fiancee, she had no choice but to go to
watch it as well:)
I went with the expectation of watching a documentary on the band
itself. However, it isn't a documentary per se. It's simply an
entire concert that was captured on IMAX3D film. There's no
commentary, only music. There are 14 songs on their set-list
through the entire film.
Let me say straight off the bat that the cinematography is superb.
Not only do you get to see perspectives of concert that you would
never get to see if you were just an audience member at the live
concert. For example, when would you ever get a chance of a birds
eye view from 10 feet above Larry Mullen as he busts out on the
drums in "Sunday Bloody Sunday"? Not only that, since the IMAX
screen itself is about 6 stories tall, you can imagine how much
larger than life the band members seem performing some of their
greatest hits.
Being a poor graduate student, I've never been to a U2 concert,
and who knows if I will ever be given the opportunity to go to one.
Though concert-goers will probably say it is a poor substitute,
this is probably the closest I will ever come to seeing U2 live in
concert. Although I do have to say that, watching the audience at
the concert, kinda made me content with not ever going to a U2
concert. A lot of the concert-goers were going crazy at the sight
of Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry. Talking to my friend Oliver
about it on Sunday, he pointed out to me that it's seriously a
secular worship service. If you think about it, it's kinda true.
People were closing their eyes, raising their hands, expressing
their adoration to these people. I enjoy U2's music and can
appreciate their talent, but that's about it.
