Many many years ago, my grandfather brought a stainless steel cup from Japan. He gave it to my dad and it is still in the house today. This is no ordinary mug. The mug is constructed to act like a thermos of some sorts, except that it has no sealed top that goes with it. It only has a plastic lid that is set on top of the mug. The amazing thing is that it works better than any sealed thermos that I know.

Here's an example. Last night at home, I filled the mug up with some ice water. This was around 11:30pm. I drank it as I was on the computer last night but did not finish it. I went to sleep around 2am and woke up this morning around 8am. The surprising thing is that there was still ICE floating around in the cup! I didn't even have the plastic lid on it. Now, I've been looking for another one of these mugs for a while, but they are no where to be found. Maybe I have to go to Japan for this.

wow, that's pretty cool! can you do an experiment with hot liquids, too? I wonder what the degree differential is compared with a sealed thermos.
