Had a conversation last night with a friend about the whole concept of blogging. It made me think about why everyone these days has a blog or a xanga. When I started my blog website back in junior/senior year of college, barely anyone had blogs, let alone had heard of them before. It was quite a novelty at the time and it was just kind of cool to have a website that people would visit on a somewhat regular basis.

Now fast forward 4-5 years and everyone has one. What is the appeal of having a blog? What makes them so popular? If you're an avid reader of people's xangas, you've probably noticed that entries run the gamut of openness. There are people who just offer summaries of their daily grind. On the other hand, you've got people who will share about anything and everything that they're feeling... to the point where you're thinking... "hmm, this is kinda personal. I wonder if they'd actually share this with me in real life". Certainly these entries are reflective of the person who owns the blog, but still... why not just share these things with people in person?

For myself, I still consider my blog a novelty, as evidenced by the innumerable times that I have re-vamped my website. It also helps to waste time during the day when I'm stuck at work with little to do. Ten minutes goes a lot faster when you're blogging than when you're just twiddling thumbs. But while I save the real depth of my sharing for live, real interactions with friends, I do hope that what I write here is somewhat insightful and purposeful. If not, then I hope that I at least helped you waste ten minutes of your day.
