The Hills Are Alive
OH man. Tonight, I had the chance to watch an original print of "The Sound of Music". By original, I mean that this was in a theater on the big screen, and this was a reel that was on loan directly from 20th Century Fox. Not only that, the reel was a very rare 70mm reel, which means that it was the HDTV of the 1960s. I was very impressed, as with a bigger film strip, the resolution was sharper, the colors were crisper, and the movie was that much more enjoyable. The sound had been remastered, and everything was digitized into 5.1 surround. It was quite an event for me.
Watching "The Sound of Music" in the a theater was quite a treat for me, as it's really something that I've never had the chance to do. A big part of it is because the movie was released about 15 years before I was even born. But just being there laughing/crying/gasping with a crowd of people made you realize what a classic this movie truly is. It's meant to be watched with people; the story is timeless and the music unforgettable.
The tickets for this movie came from my professor who gave each of his students 2 tickets for the Classic Film Fest at the Paramount theatre. I ended up taking Tiffany as a belated birthday present, and also because I knew that she would appreciate watching a classic film (in glorious 70mm, nonetheless). As we were walking into the theater, I made a bet with her as to whom we thought would be humming the music after the movie was over. I bet that it was Tiffany, and she agreed. However, when we walked out of the theater after the three hour movie, it was ME who was singing "raindrops of roses, and whiskers on kittens..."
The thing is, they don't make movies like this anymore. This afternoon, before I watched a recent DVD movie that I thought would be entertaining. The movie did very well in the theaters and was well-recieved by many people, from middle-schoolers, through college, through 30-somethings. It was filled with sex, cussing, dirty jokes, racist comments, and nothing redeeming. The truth is, I shouldn't have watched it, but I thought it would be funny and entertaining. But there are so many better options out there when it comes to entertainment. My visit to the theater proved that like no other.
