In bible study this week, we had what was probably one of the hardest exercises I've done in a while. Every day this past week we were required to write down 10 things that we were thankful for. The rule was that we were not allowed to repeat items. At first it was easy, but after that, things just got hard and it really took some thinking to be able to recognize how God had blessed me and is still blessing me. I realize that I should be thankful for a whole lot more than I even realize.

At the end of the week, here is my (very incomplete) list of things, in no particular order, to be thankful for (some might require some explanation:

  • My family
  • Jimmy and Hyejung: for their friendship and the privilege of serving in their wedding
  • Derrick and Angela: for their continual care over me
  • Ricky and Sharon: they are an example to me of godly character
  • For the privilege of attending grad school
  • Having an excellent church to attend
  • Still having many savings left over from my old job
  • Singleness and all the blessings that have come from it
  • Living in the USA
  • Having attended Johns Hopkins and learned about Cross-centeredness.
  • To have served in a handful of weddings this past year
  • Having people whom I can rely on for good advice
  • For God, who restored me back to Himself and reminds me of his unconditional goodness over me
  • Having made good friends while here in grad school
  • Thankful to have Wei around to work on cars with
  • Thankful to have Sandy to eat lunch with and talk to
  • To have learned the importance of reading books from other friends
  • Knowing just how ridiculously sinful I am
  • Being in a good work environment in the lab here at school
  • Andrew and Larry in my small group whom are a great encouragement to me
  • Being able to grieve over things but not without hope
  • Having Alex and his family close by and still in Austin after so many years
  • The recent reminder of having a Holy God present in this world
  • Always having enough money for anything that I need
  • Living in a nice house close to campus
  • Having a car to drive to school in
  • Getting a good parking spot today at 9am very close to the lab
  • Jonathan Hicks - a new friend here in Austin who loves the gospel and the Word of God
  • Having a kind professor/advisor who looks out for me
  • Grandparents who care/cared for me
  • Being able to have good conversations with my dad
  • Understanding God's forgiveness this year better than last year
  • Never having hardships that are too hard to handle
  • Being able to hang out more with Janice over the years
  • Being able to graduate this year with my Masters degree
  • Having a friend like Lindsey to get through some tough classes together
  • Having freetime to do more than just school work
  • Having joy this week from the Lord
  • Having been asked to lead a bible study
  • Being reminded of God's kindness in the beauty of women
  • ECHO prayer meetings on Wednesday mornings
  • New friendships made at church over the past year
  • A reminder that Easter is upcoming this weekend
  • Good frequent conversations with Tim "the man" Kang
  • Support from friends on the east coast for deciding to stay in Austin
  • Book of Philippians, which we are going through in our bible study right now
  • Having been able to have seen my grandpa one last time before he passed away
  • Being close to graduating
  • Paul in Philly
  • Having had made the drive up to Baltimore in a beat-up Corolla and been able to bless Paul with it.

Of course, there are countless other things that I have not named yet which I need to be thankful for. All in all though, this was quite a super exercise for me to go through because it really forced me to see all the ways that God has blessed me. And especially when I feel the tendency to complain that I don't have something or other, this really puts things in perspective.
