Wow.

As the day was winding down today, I got an email from the BME graduate coordinator. It was a forward from the undergraduate coordinator saying that one of the BME undergrads had died over the weekend.

Swimming accident at Lake Travis.

We've gotten emails like this from the school before and usually it's someone I don't know. I may know people who knew them, but that's about it.  I had thought that this time was no different. But the name seemed vaguely familiar and I guess it was curiosity that led me to look up the name on Facebook.

I was in for the biggest surprise when it turned out to be someone that I knew! I didn't know him that well. We met last semester in Tau Beta Pi and he was in my group a few times for some of the community service activities we did together. He was always a nice guy, very friendly when we talked. Hard to believe that this happened.

Kinda makes you think about the people around us. I once heard it said that how young or old someone is is related to when that person will die. As in, someone who will die in their 20's is considered pretty old even though they might be a teenager. And someone who will live to be 100 is still relatively young at age 65. By that definition, we could be surrounded by very old people and not even know it. For me, it really makes me want to make the most of the time that I have with people, because eternity could be right around the corner.

As Alex reminds me often, make sure you know what happens in eternity, because one day, sooner or later, we will have to face it. And since we will be dead longer than we will be alive, it's a good idea to be thinking about where we will spend eternity.
