One thing I forgot to mention from this weekend was an interview that I
had with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Since I was going to be up
there anyways, the lab asked me to come in for an interview and a tour
of their facility. I have to say that I was actually quite impressed by
them. Of course, it helped that I went in with very low expectations. I
went in unsure of which research group I was going to be interviewing
with. At first I thought it was going to be with a chemical detection
group, doing work that was similar to what had been going on BAE
SYSTEMS a few years ago. When I got there, it was not what I expected.
There was actually a lot of biomechanics related research going on
there. There was stuff with human crash test analyses and automotive
restraints. I was surprised since I was expecting something completely
different. But in the end, I was very excited about the work that they
are doing there. We'll see what happens with the job, it would be nice
to move back up there to the east coast, but I'm always torn between
getting a job or continuing in my academic education. If only I could
have everything:)
As a side note, yesterday I went to Family Christian Books to pick up C.J. Mahaney's new book titled "
HUMILITY: True Greatness
".
I was actually very fortunate to be able to pick it up for $3 since I
had been sent a $10 off coupon. After a conversation with G this past
weekend, I felt the need to read this book. The truth of the matter is
that I'm actually super prideful and I haven't taken the steps
necessary to fight pride in my life. Pastor Mahaney talks about ways to
combat pride in your life, and that is through the cross of Christ. John Stott writes:
"Every
time we look at the cross Christ seems to be saying to us, 'I am here
because of you. It is your sin I am bearing, your curse I am suffering,
your debt I am paying, your death I am dying.' Nothing in history or in
the universe cuts us down to size like the cross. All of us have
inflated views of ourselves, especially in self-righteousness, untill
we have visitied a place called Calvary. It is there, at the foot of
the cross, that we shrink to our true size."
