Oops.
If you own an iPhone 4, you shouldn't drop your phone on the pavement. Just a suggestion. As I found out this week from the interwebs, the glass is not easily replaceable as it is for previous iPhone generations. Previous iPhones with cracked screens could be replaced by just buying the glass screen itself, assuming the LCD screen was not damaged (like in this case with Carolyn's phone). The iPhone 4's glass screen is fused with the LCD screen meaning that if you crack the glass, you have to replace the LCD and glass together. Apple charges $199 for this repair, while the part can be bought online for $149 (the cheapest price I found).
So we went to the Apple store to see what they could be done. Thankfully, they offered to replace the phone for free as a "one time exception". I had read online that Apple was replacing cracked phones under warranty, regardless of fault. Whether or not that's true or not, it was nice to not have to pay to replace the phone, what with the iPhone5 coming up in only a few months.
